The appointment, step by step
Platelet-rich plasma uses concentrated platelets from your own blood to help repair damaged tissue. Nothing is added and nothing comes from a donor, so there is nothing synthetic in what goes back into your skin. The mechanism is explained in full on our PRP and regenerative medicine hub.
You meet a provider who looks at the skin itself — the type of scarring, how deep it goes, how much is texture and how much is color — and asks what you actually want changed.
A small sample, taken in the office, no different from a routine lab draw. You stay in the chair while it is processed.
The sample goes into a centrifuge, which separates the platelets from the rest of the blood to create PRP. That concentration step is the whole point — it is what makes the treatment worth doing.
The plasma is applied to the scarred areas, either driven in through microneedling channels or injected directly, depending on the scar. Then healing begins: natural regeneration of the skin, with improvements typically visible after several weeks rather than days.
What the platelets are asked to do
What gets advertised as acne scar removal is really scar remodelling. A pitted scar is a small area where inflammation destroyed collagen and the skin healed short. Platelet-rich plasma is loaded with the growth factors your body uses to rebuild tissue, so delivering it into that scar bed gives the skin the signal — and it does the rebuilding itself, over weeks.
PRP promotes collagen and elastin production in the treated area, which is what gradually lifts the floor of an indented scar and softens the edges of a superficial one. It works on both deep and shallow scarring.
Beyond the individual scars, patients are usually treating a surface — uneven texture, discoloration, skin that catches the light badly. Regeneration improves tone and elasticity across the whole treated area, not just at the marks.
The treatment uses your own natural healing ability, with no additives or synthetic chemicals involved. It is minimally invasive and requires little to no recovery time, which is why it fits around work in a way resurfacing often does not.

When PRP alone is not enough
Non-surgical treatment works well for mild to moderate scarring. Deeper or more stubborn scars — tethered, ice-pick, years old — often warrant an additional treatment used alongside PRP or in place of it. We would rather build you a combined plan than sell you a course of one thing and hope.
Microneedling, which is already how PRP is delivered into skin and which triggers a collagen response on its own. Laser therapy. Dermal filler, to lift a scar that is anchored down rather than simply shallow. And where the acne itself is still active or the scarring is unusual, a dermatology assessment before anything is done.

PRP asks your own skin to do the repair, which makes it a sensible option for a lot of acne scarring and the wrong first move for some of it. Both halves of that get said at the consultation.

Skin work here is done by a nationally certified physician assistant in a physician-led practice, with Dr. Stratt consulting on the case. That matters most when the honest answer is that a treatment will not help you. We have been at the same address in Boca Raton since 2014.

Before you call
More than one. Scar remodelling is a course of treatments spaced weeks apart, because the skin has to lay down new collagen between visits and that takes time. How many depends on how deep the scarring runs and how your skin responds to the first two. We tell you what we are recommending, and we photograph the area at the start so you are judging progress against an image rather than a memory.
It is minimally invasive and most people tolerate it comfortably, with topical numbing where appropriate. Expect the treated area to look flushed and feel tight for a day or two, much like a mild sunburn. There is little to no recovery time — leave the skin alone that evening, keep it out of strong sun, and most patients go back to normal the next day.
Platelet-rich plasma helps with both deep and superficial acne scars, but deeper or more stubborn scarring often responds better when PRP is combined with something else — microneedling, laser therapy or dermal filler to lift a tethered scar. Ice-pick and heavily tethered scars are the hardest category, and if we think PRP alone will not move them, we say so at the consultation rather than sell you a course.
We would rather get the active acne settled first. Treating scars while the skin is still inflamed means chasing a target that keeps moving, and we will not needle through an active breakout in the treatment area. If your acne is not yet controlled we will tell you that at the consultation and, where it is warranted, recommend a dermatology assessment before we start.
We are a self-pay practice, so acne scar treatment is not billed to insurance. After we have looked at your skin we tell you how many sessions we are recommending and what the course costs, in writing, before you commit to the first appointment. We do not quote a price for scarring we have not seen.
