Top 5 Summer Skin Care Tips

Protect Your Skin This Summer

Read through our list of summer skin tips to learn how you can protect your skin all season long!

1. Limit your time in chlorinated pools

Chlorine is especially helpful at killing the harmful bacteria in pools, but it can have some serious and long-term effects on our skin.

It destroys helpful bacteria that our skin needs, including intestinal flora (friendly bacteria that assists the body with food digestion and the production of vitamins B12 and K). This can result in eczema, acne, and rashes.

Premature aging – chlorine accelerates the aging process in a way that is similar to long-term sun exposure.

Free Radicals – chlorine may encourage the generation of free radicals in the body, specifically in the skin. Free radicals (and chlorine) have been proven to cause cancer. It also destroys proteins and leaves skin dry.

2. Wear a wide-brim hat to avoid sun exposure

Studies have shown that wearing a wide-brim hat can dramatically decrease your risk of developing skin cancer by protecting you from harmful UV rays.

For optimal protection, choose a hat that:

Is made of a DARK material capable of blocking 97% or more UV (with a rating of UPF 30 or higher)
Has at least a 3-inch long brim large enough to protect your forehead and face, nose, cheeks, and nose

3. Eat plenty of antioxidants

Nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory antioxidants are packed full of natural sun-blocking agents (like lycopene and betacarotene, for example) that offer long-term protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Foods high in antioxidants include:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Green tea
  • Pomegranates
  • Red grapes
  • Almonds
  • Leafy greens
  • Watermelon
  • and more!

4. The Truth About SPF

Many people mistakenly believe they understand how SPF works, but in reality they have no clue. For example, SPF 30 offers double the amount of protection as SPF 15, right? If you answered, “yes”, you are not alone, but you are wrong! It only offers a 4% increase of protection. The truth is, as the SPF number increases, the percentage of protection decreases and the amount of chemicals you expose your skin to skyrockets.

In the case of sunscreen, the key to successful UV protection is to continually re-apply it every 2 hours. Sunscreen wears off after time due to sweating or being rinsed off, so re-apply generously as needed every hour if needed while you are out in the sun.

5. Wash your make-up brushes every week

The use of dirty make-up brushes can lead to a host of horrifying results, but it is especially true during the summer when skin is more oily. Oil and bacteria gather in the bristles of your brush, resulting in clogged pores or worse.

Using dirty brushes can cause:

  • Acne breakouts
  • Unflattering mix of colors on your face by using brushes that have been used over and over again
  • Spreading of germs
  • A build-up of product on eyelash curlers can result in sparse eyelashes

While the consequences of using a dirty make-up brush sound pretty unpleasant, they can easily be avoided by simply washing your brushes each week with lukewarm water and soap.
